On August 9th I wrote something, and I will post it now

On what it is like coming back to New York after 9 days in the wilderness:
The city is a grotesque zoo for humans.  I have had to avert my eyes from all the people – so many people!  And I mean that literally - I’ve been walking with my head down and waiting for the subway with my eyes closed.  Some people look straight up nuts, although they may have caught my attention even before my very quiet vacation.  Others – those who might have passed for normal a couple weeks ago – look like hideous zombies wearing weird costumes and uncomfortable shoes.
One week after I got back to New York after my vacation, two friends from Boston were visiting New York.  We met for coffee in Bryant Park.  When the second one arrived, his comment about the crowds around 42nd and 6th was “Look at this place!  You could murder half these people and it would still be horrible!”
